Drinking water directive transposed into national legislation
As one of the laboratories concerned, we have been closely monitoring all the developments surrounding the European Drinking Water Directive (2020/2184) in recent months. Transposition of the directive into national law took a while, but was completed in early February (RD 4 February 2024). Please find an overview of the main changes below.
New parameters
The newly added parameters are
- Bisphenol A
- PFAS total
- The sum of PFAS
- Uranium
Â
It could also involve
- Chlorate and chlorite (if this disinfection method, e.g. chlorine dioxide, is used)
- Haloacetic acids (if disinfection methods capable of producing HAAs are used)
- Microcystin-LR (only in case of potential blooms in spring water)
Â
It is not currently mandatory to monitor these new parameters. Analyses for chlorate, chlorite and the sum of PFAS are mandatory as of 12 July 2024. For bisphenol A, haloacetic acids, microcystin-LR, PFAS total and uranium, the obligation applies as of 12 January 2026.
Modified standards for existing parameters
New values were defined for a number of existing parameters. These are the parametric values for antimony, boron, selenium, chromium and lead.

Change in minimum frequencies
Frequencies for daily consumption > 100 mÂł remain unchanged. For lower daily consumption the following changes were implemented.

(*) Member State may reduce frequency, condition : parameters checked at least once every 4 years
(**) Member State may reduce frequency, condition : parameters checked at least once every 2 years
Treated tap water from the public network
No changes are expected to the existing relaxation of treated tap water, but to date there has been no new FASFC circular confirming this. Consequently, the limited analysis packages will remain unchanged for now.
Â
Want to determine the frequency? To do so, add up the frequency for groups A and B.
Our analysis packages
Below we provide you with another overview of what is included as standard in our 2024 analysis packages with a request for Group A or B. Additional parameters can of course always be added.
